Empire Total War - No Internet No Play? |
Lead | ||
|
Is there anyway I will be able to play this without internet connection? i have played and owned every total war & expansion so far and am bitterly
disappointed and bemused as to why any fan of total war is being excluded in this way.
Please tell me I can activate it manually like with Paradox's games |

You can probably activate using telephone like most games.

From what I gather, you'll need an internet connection initially when you install it and then you won't need one ever again (I'm assuming
you'll be able to download patches through mirror sites as was done for MTWII).So yes, sort of, but you won't need one after the inital registration.
That is, if my understanding is correct. |

I think if you don't have the internet you can activate it by phone.

Really? That would be great for me and save me having to swap internet connections between computers.
Killieman, sorry, I didn't see you post when I hit 'reply'.

You need an internet connection to setup a new PC, too.....in this day-in-age, having an internet connection is essential. I don't mind that we are
required to have an internet connection. My only fear is what if Steam goes out of business (it can happen), will we never be able to reinstall ETW? There
needs to be a file or something you download that is your "activation key" that you can backup.

If Steam shuts down they'll keep a server running indefinately that will unlock all of your games so you can play them forever without needing Steam. That
is of course, if you have that game on your HDD, if you don't you lose it forever.
But Steam is unlikely to shut down any time soon so you don't need to worry too much. |

Steam is too big to go under, even if it did it would be bought out by someone like M$, EA etc

Basically all you need is to be connected to the internet once, activate and then you'll never need the internet again to play it.

I'm just going by Football Manager, which I had a choice of activating using steam or by telephone if no internet. Would be a bit cheeky expecting everyone
to have the internet.

No, it has only been confirmed that Empire: Total War will REQUIRE an internet connection for installation. It DOESN"T follow the same DRM system of FM09.
Empire: Total War is based purely on Steam.

Okay, there are WAY too many threads all discussing this issue. PLEASE read the Steam FAQ on the official website:
http://www.totalwar.com/empire/gameinfo/faq.php That should answer any and all questions about activation. If you're reading these forums, you have the internet and are unaffected by the activation. If you're reading these forums in an internet cafe or somewhere other than your personal computer, then getting the internet is of greater priority than the latest PC games, particularly if you have a PC capable of running ETW. |

Cool. Thank you for setting things straight.
Sounds like I'll need to reorganise the computers in the study then!

Having an internet connection is required for allot of things on your PC. Probably in the near future everyone will have an internet connection, things change
and we need to keep up with it or we will be left behind :)

just turn on wireless capability for 2 minutes?I tried that when we first got our new connection. I believe the corresponding phrase is 'Computer says 'no'.' Fortunately my computer desk is on wheels so it should be a simple case of getting an extension lead and wheeling it across. I'll try to test it out in the next few days to see it works (no point ordering the game if it doesn't!). Shouldn't be a problem, just a bit of a faff. [Mutters darkly about recalcitrant wireless connections]. |
