Advice on the Spanish |
Lead | ||
|
So with the new patch installed I've decided tp play the Spanish on vh/vh. I keep getting my clock cleaned though, mostly due to the fact that they start
with so many territories spread out over the map and very few troops to hold them. I have Italy on lockdown through alliances. And I can keep UP at bay by
holding the bridge between Amsterdam and Belgium. The problem is when Portugal, Morroco, The Cherokee Nation, and New France declare war on me. It starts to
stretch the troops and the economy a little thin. I can usually get the cherokee to broker peace with me for a payment and then ally wth me, so that takes them
out, but I still get attacked from all sides. Any advice? Or can someone point me in the direction of a pre existing guide?

I'd sell/trade Belgium and Lombardy and Sardinia for money, tech and possibly provinces elsewhere, like Dutch/French Guyana or even more islands in the
Caribbean. This would enable you to focus on Portugal and Italy. The Cherokee can usually be kept happy through a state gift. About Florida, make sure you
exempt that region from taxes so that it grows it's villages asap. Once you get that port, Florida will make alot of money.

Kinda what Spraetter said. I trade off many European territories to gain others peferably in the new world....or for cash. Take Morocco out quick so you can
rob trade there. Focus on destroying the Pirates and Barbary states so your income isn't crippled. Then I focus on the new world, and leave Europe for the
future.

i just played a Spanish campaign and my advice would be:
abandon Lombardy, it's worthless (the garrison you'd need to adequately defend it costs many times more than the income you derive from it) concentrate on taking Curacao, Trinidad & Tobago, and Tejas; the American colonies are a very good source of income (and become a veritable cash cow later on) don't worry about defending your other European possessions (Naples & Flanders), don't give them away but don't place much emphasis on defence forces destroy Portugal as soon as possible generally, Louisiana can be held off until it becomes part of the French territories |

I have placed with Spain quite a bit, alotugh in N/N with the hew patch, so perhaps my tactics won´t work in VH/VH. I read you have Italy under control. Good, because I am ALWAYS attacked by all factions there, one after another. I also read that you can keep the UP under control. Good. So, your only conflictive point is Florida and Spain itself. About Florida you have already dealt with the Cherokees, so you should have no problem if you have allied with them . About New France attacking you, don´t make any move against them¡¡¡ (just play defensive). I hope France hasn't broke its alliance with you because of that, and if France did, try to recover the alliance as soon as New France joins France. About Morocco and Portugal, try to get a decent army in Madrid and charge Lisboa, you take the city and problem solved (and you will soon get a lot of cash). You can control Morocco with ships in the strait of Gibraltar (your ships are better than the Moroccan ones, so just park some of them on the strait and Moroccan forces won´t be able to cross it.
After having taken Lisbon, you´ll start making some cash. You can forget about Morocco if you control the sea (or, better yet, use the very same army you used to conquer Portugal and take Tanger) and New France will very soon stop from being a problem. After that I would advice you to go for the UP, although prepare for a long a rebellious occupation. |

Although the consolidation strategy that Spraetter speaks of has merit, I prefer another method - similar to you - a diplomatic lockdown. First turn, make
an offer of alliance/protector to the Italian States, Knights of St John, and Westphalia. You can usually get them for free, though Westphalia is more hit or
miss. Offer an alliance to each of Genoa, and Venice. Attempt a trade agreement, and or alliance with Morocco and Portugal, though both of them can be
difficult to near impossible, unless you offer them some heavy gifts, or bribes. Try again on each successive turn, if you fail. You need friends and this
will generally secure your Mediterranean regions with no force commitment other than your starting force in Lombardy and garrisons for the emerging ports.

How much cash do you usually ask for in exchange for Lombardy, Naples and Belgium?

Thanks for all the advice. I've done exactly what Jamiam suggested. Now I have the Cherokee on the run, but portugal broke thier alliance and declared war
on me. Suddenly I have no cash (my trade agreement with them apperantly was making more money than i thought). They won't go for any sort of peace
agreement and neither will the Netherlands. Any ideas? I would be willing to give them one of my crappy italian states, but I'm afraid they would just take
and then declare war on me again soon after.

Conquer Portugal ASAP. That will give you enough money to deal with the UPs.

Although I haven't played as Spain yet I'd recommend keeping belgium and lombardy minimally garrisonned, disband the excess troops, and concentrade
your forces in Florida and Spain. Immediately focus all of your economy on cranking out an army or two in Spain and you should attack Portugal in the first few
turns. After unrest is down suitably send that army and take Gibralter and Morocco. With enough momentum you should easily be able to wipe through the Barbary
States.
Keep in mind if you lose Belgium, Lombary, or Naples don't sweat it. Algieria and Libya should create a suitable barrier against the Turks. Use the same army that took Portugal, Gibralter, and the Barbary States to launch a naval invasion to regain any lost territory in Italy, or capture new territory at Corsica, Sardinia, Savoy, or the Papal States. Try at all cost to remain on steady neutral terms with Venice, they can be a pain As for the New World don't even waste a dime until you've gotten a good situation in Europe. In fact disband your entire navy and unnecessary garrisons there. The new world can be a major financial waste in the wrong type of predicament. Maintaining a reasonable enough force in St. Augustine should be enough if the Cherokee do attack. I caution against gaining any new lands other than Texas, as these can overextend you and make it extremely difficult tactically. A little bug I discovered as well is if you completely neglect a world theater the AI never gets cranked up properly. I played england up to about 1760 not building a single building in the New World. Moose Factory never got touched, and the pirates never raided my ports. As a side note the best way to look at a provinces worth is not just its revenues and potential amount of towns, but also the costliness of having to defend it against constant armies and raids. This would make Florida, Belgium, Lombardy, and Mexico very undesirable compared to Portugal, North Africa, and parts of Italy. |

i just traded with the dutch for ceylon for my belgium territory. focused on capturing all of the islands and all of southern america, then i took out the
martha confederacy from my beachhead in ceylon, india decided to take milan, so i then reverted all of my power to taking out north africa, so i could
eventually invade italy from the south. i also took all my fleets i had made for the carribean, and used them to strangle austria and venice. the one mistake i
made though, is i %$*!*$ of the mugals and the ottomans by invading more of india and greece.
