Posts: 587 05/15/09 07:05:37	Tags : None Command Structure has not figured in total war in the past. And I very much doubt that it will in the future. But in real 18th century battles orders were issued by the commander and chief and sent by courier to the appropriate commander in the chain of command and so on. If you made a mistake in your order then you had to watch the disaster play out on the battlefield like Raglan at the Battle of Balaclava (Charge of the light Brigade), Also there was a chance that your courier might not make it. In the total war series everything is instantaneous and without error. Of course it would be left to a sub commander to make appropriate tactical measures in his own area. But any major battlefield moves would have to be ordered by the CC. It would amusing to watch this played out on a total war battlefield with a courier being sent out from you with a order to a sub unit or group. And watch how these orders play out. If anyone watched the Time Commanders then they will have some idea how difficult a battle would be to control.

Posts: 170 05/15/09 07:13:03	I agree, although it would be realistic, it would be terribly frustrating and make battles much more difficult to fight. I think it's on the same par as requesting that the only view of the battle should be from the perspective of the general, meaning low view to the ground and only where the general is. That would be equally irritating and realistic. I think game play would definitely suffer greatly.

Posts: 587 05/15/09 07:13:46	Maybe but it would make victory less of a certainty for those who find the AI not much of a challenge. Plus the there would be a sense of satisfaction if you manage to implement a successful battle plan.

Posts: 552 05/15/09 07:16:53	It would need your sub-commanders to make sensible tactical decisions. something at the moment the ai can't do. It needs you instantaneous ability to become any units commander and make the correct decisions because the computer can't hack it...

Oddly I don't find the game frustrating since I can micromanage every aspect of a battle its all to easy. And what I find enjoyable is to be able to stand back and watch the Battle unfold. Something I never get the chance to do since I am always knee deep in small alterations of facing etc. But as someone has pointed out who would trust the AI to carry out your orders. Be more fun to have a team of real players forming a chain of command against a opposing team. A super Multi player option.

Posts: 1076 05/15/09 08:55:15	The whole "give command and then watch your troops execute them" is not a new idea in gaming, and has been done, rather well, by Combat Mission games. Although, their battles are not purely real time. You give commands in turn based mode, and then when all sides have given commands you go into real time combat and you watch your troops carry out your commands for the next 60 seconds without you being able to alter any commands for those 60 seconds. And your units will respond by themselves to all kinds of suprises. It's actually very fun and enjoyable way to play, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement something like that in TW series. Battles in Combat Missions can last a long time on big maps.

Suppose I have three stacks in the game. I command one and give orders to the commanders of the other two stacks. Click a commander, click the group formation I want him to use for his units, click an order (withdraw, defent, move, attack, assault), and click the destination on map where I want him to go. Modify his actions based on his traits. The commander does his own thing after that. Make me wait a certain amount of time before I can change his orders again, depending on how good my general is and his traits.
