I thought about this and decided while it would be cool implementing this would be impossible.

Empires prettymuch stop existing after 1900.

Battles would be difficult to do, would it be feasible using infantry units in a more flexible manner, as the more modern tactics involve more dispersed units.

I can see it looking cool but, idk certain nations in WW2 were obviously waay more powerful than others in production capacity and tech.

Possible nations, i would imagine the US would have massive balancing issues, they're just so damn powerful risks of another Orange scurge maybe?
Germany yes they would be okay.
Italy, hmmm tricky but possible.
Spain, well before the spanish civil war sure, after that not a chance.
France yes, they did actually have military and units but their tactics were woefully out of date (ie using armour as broken up infantry support about 2 to each battalion, resulting in the German massed armour cav annihilating the French with ease).

Britain would be cool to play as. as would Russia with it's huge internal problems.

One problem hmmm, taking territories, i mean resistance to foreign occupation would be immense, supply lines are critical.
Navy balancing would be tough, plus with the historical differences there would be little point in diplomacy because it was essentially two huge armed camps in ww2.
Germany, Austria, Italy (japan a little later), Finland.
Britain, France, Poland (lol i think poland would have to be a minor faction) Russia was only an ally far later on in the war, the US took ages to get involved. oh and China

I think however the biggest issue is as it's a worl war, there would be a need for the whole world involved Europe, the Far east Pacific, middle East, North Africa.

Course there's the whole gas chambers with Hitler thing, i mean that would be beyond the pale for many people, for ethical reasons i think the game could be limited. I know it is a war game but, well the memories of ww2 are still there.
I mean hitler and Stalin with the massed killing, er hang on.
The warfare would be cool, course pathfinding knowing the total war series recently would take a number of years to perfect. unless they decide the rush the game out.

Then there's the whole, well ww2 has been done to death in games, just so overdone it's not even funny. The amount of gameplay of the games released is actually longer than the war itself.

Plus limited time period (although i suppose they could get around this by increasing the number of turns in a year from 2 to about 20-30?

There also might be a problem getting WW1 or 2 into a TW format, where the battles and campaign map would be separate. I think that those conflicts were more 'all across the line' than in specific battle points.

It would be nice to see a realistic game where tanks aren't built on the field at the same time as the battle though...

aaaag, the tactics in WW1 were non-existant.
Can you imagine redoing the trench battles?

Move troops forward

Troops annihilated by enemy machine guns.

Open up with artillery barrage for several days.

Repeat lose millions.

game over.


I'm sorry but i think a WW2 version of total war is more feasible. and if nothing else waay more fun.
I honestly don't see how ww1 would work in practice.
