Let's say I uninstall this NET 1,1 thingy from the control panel.. will it go back to how it was before? (No extra accounts added and instant login).

Just renable autologon via TweakUI. This is happening across the board (meaning apps with .net dependant programming) with Vista you don't have this issue..... You got user protection so you gotta enter passwords all the time. It's not a Sega problem it's a Microsoft issue. |

Ok tell me what does this program do, beside giving live updates from the www? How secure is it? Will I need to keep this crap up-to-date to keep my pc safe
ect. ?
I guess I'm just a little confused and pissed by what I thought was just an innocent patch suddenly changes accounts, things not even related to the game. And for what a stupid a stupid game-launcher! piss poor show CA!

I agree...I can't seee why it had to be included. It appears to be troublesome for a fair share of the users and moreover, the community didn't ask for
it...

I think the .NET 1.1 was need to have the survey on the Launcher, so it can connect to the internet and send the servey results back to CA

Windows showed a securtiy update for .NET Framework, I downloaded and installed it. Seems to work just fine, I'm going to try and install 2.0 for my ATI
drivers and see how that runs.

How did it show a security update?
That was excatly what I was affraid of, one more program that (you didn't ask for) needs attention. I sure don't like it. |

Exactly my thoughts, those features (call it what you want) are completely unnecessary and just plain useless.
Anyway I would still like to know if this stupid program is or could jeopardize my computer security? (haven't got one of those security update notice either) |

The .Net functionality has been pushed by MS and many software vendors are moving towards it, be it video games or industrial strength software like Matlab
(latest version 7.3, R200b). This wouldn't be the last (and it isn't the first that I have seen that require it).
If you really want to blame anyone, blame MS for trying to push for progress in its software.

The principle function of the .NET framework is to provide a set of tools for developers that save them time having to code standard things like user controls,
data access, web access etc. The new launcher is a web-enabled application, so as most of the hard code in this game is written in C++, it would make sense for
them to use .NET.
Microsoft is pushing this heavily as there is a big move away from standard Windows applications to Web-based applications, e.g. Microsoft Office Live. Versions 2.0 and 3.0 of the .NET framework are very different to 1.1, so I would imagine they used 1.1 because it had all the features they needed. Version 2.0 is a bigger install and would have seriously expanded the patch. I would not recommend anyone uninstalling it, you could get all sorts of unpredictable results. I know some people are not impressed that it just installed itself without permission, but it is an essential element and it is standard practice in the software industry to install libraries and drivers without asking the user. M2TW installs a number of Visual C++ libraries as standard without asking, but then so does anything else written in C++. The user login issue is caused by .NET and is a Microsoft problem, so please don't blame Sega/CA, it's quite a rare issue. |

yes. but there are better ways to access the net than a badly thought out .net application based on system that is known to have issues. i have plenty of games
and applications that do not require this.
i also consider it pretty bad when it doesnt even check if it needs to install the framework. i have installed this on another pc with 1.1 and its updates installed. it still installs. doesnt ask and causes the same problems. as the problems dont appear in the leaked version it is blatant that this is not a microsoft problem. but a CA one.

toxicseagull wrote: Yes, totally agree Toxic.... there are many better ways to write an app that accesses the net. Unfortunately, the skill levels required are higher. I have been in software development most of my working life and basically for me, things like .NET represent dumbing down. It's supposed to take all the slog out of writing complex Windows apps, but all it does is make people lazy and enable people to write apps they don't truly understand. If you use .NET you have to trust that the libraries all work and that they are (relatively) bug free, but of course there is no predicting what any software developer will try to achieve with them, so there is no definitive way to test them and often they end up in the hands of guys who don't understand the core technology well enough to detect errors. Not saying that CA doesn't have highly competent engineers, but when you start trusting packages software libraries, IMO, you are asking for trouble if you use them for complex, commercial applications. M2TW is a very demanding application and clearly very complex. I hope they think carefully before leaping into .NET for the main game. |
