As I'm sure all you brilliant people who subscribe to our Total War newsletter have already read, SEGA's Alex has had a spot of bother with Shogun recently. For the couple of you who missed it, here is his Newsletter plea in full:
"Sitting here doing a post Christmas desk tiding session I unearthed my copy of Total War Eras. I was instantly reminded that I had always intended to play the older titles Shogun and Medieval. This got me thinking. How different are they from the Rome and Medieval II that I have played to death and love? I was of course expecting the inevitable graphical void but in terms of game play could I cut it?
I have often seen threads on the forums extolling the various virtues of both the more recent and older titles. I decided it was time to find out for myself. While loading Shogun I must admit I was sat there chomping at the bit. I loved Rome and Med II to my mind was even better but here I was about the play the game that started it all.
The Shogun Total War menu came into view and I decided a full tutorial is in order. The basic tutorial runs me through the camera moves, unit selection and basic troop movement. As fans have mentioned this is different and it took me a long time to get used to the fact that I couldn’t zoom in using the roller on my mouse.
The remaining tutorials take me through combat formations, how to engage the enemy and a little lesson from History. All in all I felt I had prepared myself for war and with my knowledge from the latter titles combined with knowing the differences here, I felt I was ready.
Um, no, I wasn’t. As the campaign map loaded I was presented with a map that I had never seen before. The movement of your forces are completely different, not to mention the general management of the Empire. It took me several hours to work out how to move my armies. It took even longer to work out how to build anything let alone increase my military might, or indeed merge my forces after my first (and only) battle, which yes, resulted in resounding failure.
Basically I grossly underestimated Shogun, thinking because I knew Rome and Med II I would be able to walk in and throw my weight around. After a full read-through of the manual and a sweep of the office to find if there was anyone who could help I realised there was only one thing for it, I needed to ask the experts. This is where you come in. We’ve set up a thread on the forums where you can help me get to grips with Shogun. I throw myself at the infamous collective knowledge of the community. Please help me get an idea of what I am doing by visiting and giving me your tips."
Over to you....
