UPDATE: Tested this out, works great. Boiling oil, controllable reinforcements, new balancing, all in the Grand Campaign. This is exactly what I had hoped for. This should be pinned.

Hey, Yakaspat, would you mind giving some feedback on it? Does it have any problems the vanilla Grand Campaign doesn't have? Do the new features add new strategies and tactics?

I've been playing the Teutonic Campaign all this week and really enjoying it. I've also played several dozen custom Kingdoms battles and several Grand Campaign custom battles with the Retro Mod. I played, though, with the balance changes that Lusted gave me, which are identical to the balance changes in the Retro Mod (the balance changes mentioned in Lusted's blog), for several weeks in a Grand Campaign playing as the Venetians. I must admit at first I was extremely skeptical, but, I really do now prefer the new balancing. Cav are no longer over-powered, and are not now the "tanks" of the battlefield, but, when heavy cav are used properly (ie, not against heavy spears and pikes in a frontal charge), they are still a totally powerful unit as they were historically. Spears are now less effective against swords, and swords are very weak against cav charges. Two-hand units are fixed, too, and pikemen behave much better. The Retro Mod introduces boiling oil, which now really makes one careful when attacking a city. The player must now use multi-prong attacks, ie, attach the gate and the walls. My first battle in Kingdoms was a full stack army against a 3/4 stack Lithuanian castle, and, I was shocked at how difficult it was to take the castle. I lost 85% of so of my army, which was of pretty advanced units, against militia pagans, due to the bottlenecking I experienced by trying to force my way through the gate and a small breach in a wall. I should have brought more scaling ladders, and paid a high butcher's bill. So, seiges seem more difficult. I also noticed walls seem stronger. It took nearly all of my two catapaults ammo to take out the gate and one wall section! Ballista are now nearly useless against walls, too.

No, the Retro Mod doesn't negatively effect the GC in any way. It just introduces the new Kingdoms improved game mechanics, that's all. I feel it is essential to the gamer who still wants to play the GC while enjoying the new expansion.

I am grateful to Unspoken Knight, as it a start for the modders, but to me Sega and CA have dropped the ball on this expansion compared to the first Medieval expansion. The Grand Campaign (having an Early, Middle, and Late starting point options were huge for me) is where its at!
