Posts: 113 09/07/07 03:33:52	Tags : diplomacy In your experience, is there any faction better disposed to become a protectorate? I think that there is no possibility to achieve such submission from some factions as the roman or the egyptians because they will never accept it. Or is it easier to achieve an enemy faction to become a protectorate if there isn't a great cultural difference? For example between gauls and britons, greeks and macedons, pontus and armenia ...I noticed that it happens more often amongst theese AI controlled factions. I would like to know your opinion about this issue.

Posts: 3361 09/07/07 06:33:55	I'm back! Well in my experience i only had one protectorate agreement that actually worked. That was when i was the Julii and i kicked the Gauls all over the shop then left them with one settlement in Spain just because i didn't have the strength there left to wipe them out. So they sat there and rotted and didn't break their agreement. Apart from that they never actually stay for me.

Posts: 8 12/10/07 16:52:07	I see simon has had a good experience with protectorates! Well not the same for me....... In my current campaign as the selucids i have destroyed egypt and armenia. The people of pontus are at war with me, but are only left with one settlement. I have offered them 100,000 denarii for them to be my protectorate, but they have yet to submit!! .........gosh darn i hate pontus!!!!

Posts: 431 12/11/07 07:14:39 Veles	I had the Germans as a protectorate (as the Julii) when they had two settlements and a fort. They just sat there and minded their business. One time I broke a siege that the Brutii put on one of their settlements. I don't know if they "appreciated" that or not. Does anyone's experience confirm or deny that helping an ally/protectorate like that makes them less likely to betray? Of course, in the end it was I who betrayed them. But at least I sent a diplomat in first and asked them to give up before I attacked.

Posts: 155 12/11/07 12:03:59	I've had good experience with my Protectorates. Once properly isolated and beaten, you can control who they are at war/peace with. I have been able to get many factions as a protectorate. The easiest ones are the 'weak' factions like Numidia and Spain. I tend to keep them as pets occasionally. I find that gifting territory that is hard to control to a protectorate 'local' faction is a good way to deal with the constant rebellion. I.E. Protectorate the Brits, and gift them back the northern half of the Britian Islands. then they are stuck with the rebellions. Then I can gift them territory on a boarder I don't want to defend. push them to attack and build the buffer zone. I did get S.P.Q.R as a protectorate once. I gifted them some territory in Egypt while the alliance was still strong. After I kicked them out of Rome they were willing to submit to being a protectorate. Even after I gifted them half of Africa they still wouldn't go conquer anything, so they didn't make a good protectorate. Last Edited By: GSWar 12/11/07 12:06:23. Edited 1 time.

Posts: 40 12/16/07 04:45:51	I also prefer buffer zones and try to think how could I make strong alliances. I think "your enemies are my enemies" diplomacy works and that giving regions as a gift for your ally makes the relationship stronger.

Posts: 1297 12/24/07 06:42:11	if you force another faction into becomin your protectorate, they cant attack you. you can get money out of them per turn as well. and if you're attacked by someone, your protectorate will also be called into the scrap.
