Hey Guys,
I've had this game since it came out but just recently upgraded to a system with the power to run it. After the upgrade (I installed a new motherboard with a Core2Duo 2.4GHz E6600) the game ran flawlessly. However, I then proceeded to patch the game to v1.3 and ran into some trouble the classic "unexpected error" problem a lot of people seem to have. I dropped back and did a complete reinstallation of Medieval II (making sure to delete the SEGA directory and the registry entries for the game). I then patched again to 1.2 with no installation problems. However, once I went run the setup file of the patch for 1.3 it received the following error from the installshield:
Error Code: -5006 : 0x80070057
Error Information:
>SetupNew\SetupDLL.cpp (841)
PAPP:Medieval II Total War
PVENDOR:SEGA (http://www.sega-europe.com)
PGUID:C0698BDA-0D29-40EE-8570-A31106DF9AB1
$12.0.0.49974
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 7.0.6000.16544
This is something that is happening at the very beginning of the execution of setup.exe, before it is even loaded into memory. The really strange part about this error is however, that it pops up every single time I try to run any Medieval II's setup.exe files for any version. I cannot even uninstall the game properly. I even receive this same error when I run the setup on the CD, which really worries me that I am looking at a pretty large problem. I have run the installshields of some of my other games though and they all load up fine, the errors only occur with setup files that deal with Medieval II.
I am a computer engineer and would call myself pretty knowledgable about things like this but I cannot figure out what the problem is. Judging by the error message it is a problem with a C++ file "SetupDLL.cpp" which is most likely contained within or linked from _setup.dll, which is where setup.exe draws its resources from. I've examined the code in the dll but it is quite complex and I don't see how there could be any problems on that end (especially when I run it from the dvd, there is no way that code could have been changed)
I've looked all over this forum and the internet but can't seem to find anyone who has had this problem. Any input you guys could offer would be a huge help to me. I've loved these games ever since shogun and consider them some of the best-made software out there. You can really tell these guys work hard developing these games. Sorry for the verbosity of my post, I just wanted to explain my situation in detail... I'll give you my specs but I doubt this is a hardware problem, as the game has run perfectly on this configuration before. I could post a dxdiag if you'd like but everything passes normally and my drivers are all up to date.
System Specs:
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6600 (2.4GHz);
Memory: 2 gigs of DDR2 PC4200 533MHz;
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 AGP
Hard Drives: 20gig C: IDE drive;
80gig D: IDE drive (M2TW is installed here);
40gig G: SATA drive;
CD\DVD: 2 DVD/RW drives
OS: Windows XP SP2
This looks like it may be a registry problem but I don't know if there is an easy solution to something like that other than reloading the entire system. Thanks!
