Posts: 11 11/06/07 15:05:58	Tags : turks, crusades, diplomacy Another question, this time about diplomacy... Playing the Turks, I control Edesse, Tripoli, Palestine (in fact nearly all the East of the world map!) ; my problem is that it seems I am cursed to be unable to make any alliance. I eliminated the Egyptians very early in the game, and I'm now at war with Byzantines. They don't seem to be in the mood for a truce, even if their kingdom is shrinking to nothing (Bulgaria, Greece, Rhodes and Creta only left) and I'm afraid they would be destroyed rather than accepting my supremacy. That's the first point. Is there a way to achieve peace with them? I'm thinking to try to send Alims so that they become majoritarily Muslims, but I'm even not sure it will be enough... The second point is that Spaniards and French are sending regularly crusades to my provinces (Edesse and Tripoli so far), so they are consequently at war with me, and this breaks any chance of making an alliance with my neighbours. The Poles were the only ones to have agreed to an alliance, but they stopped it because of a crusade that the French sent to me! I'm a little bit frustrated to be forced to make a permanent war against everyone (even the Almohads refuse alliance!), just because I'm the rightful landlord of the Holy Grounds... Is there a way for peace? I am still in 1145... Thank you!

Posts: 328 11/06/07 16:12:11	Once your empire becomes the largest of all the factions (which it probably is now), you will find that no one wants to be your friend. This always happens. It is part of the game and it keeps it interesting... More enemies = more fun! Why do you want peace anyway? Peace is overrated! The game is called Medieval Total WAR not Medieval Total PEACE!

Posts: 317 11/06/07 21:08:42	too right. what benefit peace anyway? as far as I can figure, you'll get betrayed and sneakily attacked on all fronts anyway so may as well keep it out in the open. and the more people you are at war with who ally against you, the more chance for 2-on-1 or even 3-on-1 battles against you...now that's something to keep the interest level high...

When you reach a certain size, you'll find it exceptionally hard to get an alliance going. That you hold the Holy Land doesn't exactly help, as the Catholics will be very keen to "re-conquer" it.

I'm playing as the Danes, I took Scandinavia, steamrolled the Germans, and the Greeks allied with me, while everybody else declined on me. As a Muslim faction, I think the AI just may not care. Build up troops EVERYWHERE.

(hahahahaha). I rarely ally with anybody in MTW. Things are quite different for M2TW as the AI reacts a little differently.

Posts: 94 11/08/07 13:20:59	Heh. Yes, marry your princesses to your sons if no one else will marry them. The Merovingian dynasty was notorious for this (though it's earlier than game periods). Otherwise, I agree - once you're powerful alliances become increasinly difficult. If you're peaceful for years as a Catholic faction the Pope will eventually ask you once your king's influence is high enough, barring conflicts with his current allies. Long periods of peace is the only way. Perversely this will result in fewer children, however. As the Turks, don't worry. You don't need foreign princesses for children - your princes marry automatically. Use the "autopeace" factor if you wish - if you have no contact with a warring faction (including removing fleets from their coastlines) they will become neutral. Once you've pushed the Byzantines onto the islands do this and they'll at least trade with you. Also, if your enemy has a port, once you've confined him to his final castle withdraw, and he'll go neutral and trade with you. Roll on the Janissary Heavy Infantry (although when I play the Turks everyone runs away from them).

Posts: 11 11/08/07 15:13:51	All these posts are very interesting, indeed... It's a pity that emissaries seem to be so secondary in the game! I will try to follow sharpshooter's advice about staying quiet to obtain peace or neutrality, but it seems that while my distant neighbours will go on sending me Crusades (Aragonese and German have just launched one each, after French and Spaniards) the closer (and weaker) ones prefer to send me assassins! Until now, they've been caught but I feel a little bit unsecure... At least I intend to do the same, even though assassins seem to be quite unefficient (I am planning to launch them abroad, after "forming" them "at home", getting stars by killing priests and princesses)! I also had the surprise to be proposed peace by the French after crushing (in Constantinople) a crusade launched to Tripoli. It didn't last, because of the war going on between my Turks and the Byzantines, also their allies, but I think if I suppress the Byzantines (which should be done by 1150) and IF defeating a crusade leads automatically to a peace proposal by the defeated cusaders, I might be in peace with Occident. Has anyone experienced this? Also, I believe I read somewhere that automatic conversion of the king may occur when the new religion exceeds a certain % of conversion. Can anyone confirm? It would be interesting to try this with my closer neighbours (Novgorod's men and Hungarians for example, which seem to be "non-player" kingdom)... About marriages, I've recently heard an historian explaining that Richard LionHeart had planned to marry his own sister to Saladin, to build an alliance between them (it was not made, as we know!), so let's believe to "la Paix des Braves"! Fierywokbar, what do you mean by : "As a Muslim faction, I think the AI just may not care. Build up troops EVERYWHERE."?

What I meant by that is that, even if [a Muslim faction] is peaceful, and makes alliances with various other factions, the European factions will still try to kill that faction. This was in response to your first post Cloclo, where you were talking about how you couldn't get a ceasefire or an alliance while playing as the Turks. Having played the Turks as well (and also having been unable to obtain a ceasefie with the Greeks, and also having been backstabbed by Egypt), the fact of the matter was that to survive, a Muslim faction has to build up troops EVERYWHERE.
