Scenario: Your enemy has a couple of onagers. You send a platoon to rush them and after some sharp fighting, the onagerators retreat.
Your men have another objective, so they leave the onagers behind.
Not long after, a couple of onager projectiles come smashing into your army. The onagerators had rallied and returned to their machines.
You can prevent this. Without having to chase down the artillerists and kill them all.
When you drive artillerists away from their machines, set your troops to attack the machines themselves. After a while of the soldiers hacking at them, they'll collapse.
The same applies to siege towers, though you have to attack them at the base. This would prevent a relieving army from using them to enter a city you've recently entered.
I've never done it but I assume it would work with rams and ladders also.
