Posts: 4 12/14/07 03:43:15	Tags : diplomacy, ceasefire Every campaign I play, at turn 50 I'm at war with all my neighbours and the relations with the pope are very low. Some turns later practically all relations are abysmal, even with lots of factions I didn't even meet. I'm never able to stop a war with a faction, I always have to exterminate those factions completely (wich is major part of the fun, I know ) I always 'occupy' settlements, 50/50 ransom/release POW's, never 'end battles', and have mostly 2 assassins who assassinate/sabotage from time to time. [edit]I don't use the diplomacy screen much because I never seem to achieve anything in there[edit] Is it even possible to get a cease fire and improve relations? Posts: 214 12/14/07 03:51:11	Establish alliances early on when they are still easy to get. Get trade rights with everyone. Don't betray your allies! After a while your reputation will improve. Once you have a reliable or better reputation diplomacy will be more normal, not a lot more normal cause the diplomacy engine sux, but still. To achieve a ceasefire - put pressure on the enemy i.e. beseige a city or two with superior forces and then ask. The AI wont give a cease fire unless it feels that it needs peace with you and that you can be trusted to keep that peace. Disclaimer: Sometimes the AI just acts like its on crack!

Posts: 310 12/14/07 12:52:39	There are no guarentees, but if you want longer alliances: - Ally with the Pope - Don't use assassins at all - Go on crusades - Don't blitzkrieg a ton of settlements to rapidly expand - Never initiate the attack on neutral Catholics or any of your allies - always Occupy settlements - Release or ransom prisoners. - Send your princesses to marry your allies - Give your allies and the Pope occasional money/map info/etc. - Give and get Military access from your allies

Posts: 2854 12/14/07 14:10:08	Russia. I'm doing exactly the same with them on my current campaign. Only works with medium campaign difficulty, cos in hard or very hard the AI is hardwired to attack every few turns.

Posts: 1637 12/14/07 14:32:50 Post Captain	No, you can go a long way as "very trustworthy" on hard campaigns and just start buying stuff, I've done it as Byzantium and Egypt. Of course if you're about to achieve your campaign goals you automatically get a huge drop in relations, as the AI switches to trying to prevent you from achieving victory (that's why you can go from Trustworthy to Despicable in one turn).

Posts: 81 12/14/07 17:08:59	My most recent campaign as the Byzantine Empire has been completely uneventful (first campaign with kingdoms retrofit for GC). I'm in a sort of league of nations. Byzantium, Milan, Sicily, Poland and Hungary. All are allied to one-another. I made that alliance with the intention of being able to ignore my western flank, but the Turks have been as meek as mice, not even coming within sight range for 70 turns, Egypt seem to be winding their way into the League (they recently made alliances with Sicily and Hungary). I have not had a war EVER. I never made any military units at all, hoping that I would be able to lure the Turks into attacking me but the AI seems to have caught a bad case of conservativeness. I'm about 70 turns in and Denmark have done nothing, England captured Wales and no more. Scotland have not left Edinburgh (Not even to go for Inverness). Does the AI shadow the human player all the time? I've intentionally kept Byzantium "weak" in the AI's eyes (I ensure my treasury is always below 20k, have to give away 10k or so every turn now, never increase my military, never make assassins) and the AI seems to be standing back to give me a chance. I know it goes into hyper-aggressive mode when you're near to winning but does it only advance so far before it waits for the human player to catch up? Usually I'm always building my forces and the other nations will grow to keep pace, but now it seems that everyone is stagnating. Not that I care much, I'm sure it will brighten up again when the mongols turn up.

Posts: 849 12/14/07 21:56:22	I thought the Mongols come at turn 65; how come you're still waiting for them at turn 70? I did that thing with the league-of-nations-like alliance and indeed everyone seemed too reluctant to start a war. It happens even if several factions are just allied with you and not each other. You shouldn't ally with factions that all next to each other or they'll have no one to attack freely and the game will stagnate.

Posts: 5233 12/15/07 03:33:48 Veles	Yes, in one campaign I played as Sicily I allied with everyone and by turn 140 there hadn´t been a single war excet the one between the Mongols and Turks, there hadn´t even been any crusades or jihads or anything. Then I blockaded a Milanese port and all hell went lose. Everyone had gathered huge amounts of troop that were now released everywhere. In 20 turns 4 faction were destroyed without me doing anything. Then I moved in an destroyed the weakened factions.

Posts: 81 12/15/07 04:20:28	I did say it was retrofit, I haven't altered it in any other way and my descr_events says they'll turn up around turn 130. My league of nations didn't so much rise up out of planning. I allied to Milan because they are always successful (and I think they have good princesses), Sicily, Poland and Hungary all requested alliances from me. I accepted those because getting an alliance proposal from the AI is a rare gem once you're a bit into the campaign. Thing is that league-of-nation type alliances will turn up in almost every campaign, you can choose to be in it or not; if you're not you have a campaign of unending war, if you're in it (and the nations in it are reasonably strong) everyone else wanders around slowly looking at their feet trying to offend no-one else.

Posts: 42 12/17/07 08:28:04	I'm still on my first campaign and have not really explored the idea of a peacefull campaign yet. But I do not understand the AI sometimes. For example, I am playing the English and have conquered pretty much all of France with the exception of 3 provinces to the east. Portugal has conquered all of Spain and is slowly but surely expanding through North Africa. We have the same allies and are at war with some of the same factions, yet I can't seem to get an alliance from them. I've tried countless of times with offers that are stated as generous but they don't bite. I'm waiting to get a princess and see what happends but they alwais come up with extremely low charm. This is somewhat frustrating.

Posts: 849 12/17/07 13:58:12	For an official marraige alliance, you can even use a 0 charm princess. But they can still refuse, if they have other plans! I assume they refuse your offers because they perceive you as a threat(you're a strong faction who shares borders with them!) and plan to attack you some time in the future.

I have tried the League of Nations while playing as France, so the League was me, England, Holy Roman Empire, Milan, Scicly (correct spelling please tell me) and finally Spain. This was in turn 15. At turn 30 I added Venice and Hungary. We were all allied to each other and when the Mongols turned up we all sent like 3 20 unit armies ech to deal with them. We flattened them, however when the Timurids showed up, we all seemed to wait for them to attack us, as at the time all my settlements were Huge Cities or Citadels with fully upgraded troops, with ballista towers, I never bother with cannon towers as their accuracy sucks. Eventually when we got the new world, I just eliminated all the Aztecs and then just ambushed my allies armies, so they never actually found out it was me as I killed all prisoners.
