anyway, after grabbing kingdoms and drooling as I made short work of campaigns as all the playable factions, I went into tinkering the campaign text files to unlock "unplayable" factions. now, in the main game, you can unlock the papal states and play them just fine. I never had to edit anything extra to get them working. but my first stop in the expansion pack was to unlock norway in the teutonic campaign.
and this is where the problem exists... norway can't recruit any military units at all. and when you complete missions that normally would result in receiving free units at your capital, it gives you this message "you cannot be rewarded as you cannot recruit any units". how strange indeed...
so I went back into the files and modified a few more places, giving norway some win conditions, changing the ai_label from 'turtle' to 'norway', and then a whole heck of a lot of additions to the campaign script to include norway in everything from hanseatic league notifications and consideration to mirroring the requirements for denmark to form the kalmar union so that norway could as well.
this all worked fine and dandy in the game. so far I have been able to conquer sweden, finland, and all the little islands to receive the popup message that it's time to kill the danish king(well it still says norwegian but whatever, it works). a couple turns later the hre did that work for me, taking over denmark's holdings in northern germany and the denmark region, where their king was hiding. voila, norway forms the kalmar union and immediately receives all of denmark's holdings in estonia, latvia, and russia.
but... I did all this with one army, simply paying for mercenaries whenever the opportunity arose. it still will not let me recruit any military units at all - most nonmiltary units like diplomats and merchants can be recruited without any problem, but priests cannot. norway cannot even build churches even though they are catholic. how weird! captured churches do not even have a line in the description saying "Enables recruitment of: Priest", that part is simply empty.
here's a picture showing the capital, a fortress, and its lovely recruiting menu. if I right click on the fortress or stables or anything military related in the buildings list, it only lists the benefits of the building, not what units it allows the creation of.
as you can see we successfully formed the kalmar union as norway and adopted their flag. that gave us a lot of formerly danish military units in eastern europe, which shall help considerably since we still can't recruit any.
does anyone know if this can be resolved simply by editing some other text file? I don't have the brains to breakdown the kingdoms exe and try to recompile it.
