If it's just history questions, then let's move the Cannae question to the History Quiz. Anyway, my answer to the question would be something along the line of what Aeraaa said. The fact that the Romans significantly outnumbered their Carthaginian foes (86.000 Romans & allies vs. 50.000 Libyans, Iberians and Gauls), should have won, almost won, but in they end did not win continues to fascinate historians from all over the world. Hannibal's tactic off letting his center get pushed back and then hemming in the enemy troops that have broken through with reinforcements has been studied by generals throughout the ages. Von Schlieffen, Rommel and Norman Schwartzkopf all admired Hannibal's tactical genius and tried to copy his tactics in the battles they themselves fought.

Could it be that Cannae is not only the supreme example of the pincer movement, but also one of the best documented ones? Polybius and Livius have written about it, the former some 50-60 years after the battle took place. Plutarch also has an account of what happened. The abundance of literature actually allows historians to study the battle. Another reason could be that Cannae shows that the army that has the most cavalry has a large advantage, even if it's outnumbered significantly in infantry. Posts: 5290 01/15/08 14:11:34	My answer/opinion: It is the ultimate demonstration of how the master general (in this case Hannibal) triumphs over superior odds with a combination of improvisation with the materials at hand(If i am right in thinking, Hannibal fully intended and expected to make a base and reinforce his army before assaulting the Romans on his own terms) and the knowledge and experience of how best to utilise them, making it a good reference for strategy and methods of victory in a modern setting when faced with a similar situtation?

Posts: 2983 01/17/08 00:05:31 Post Captain	acceleration occurs in the barrel, once the projectile leaves the barrel it begins to decelerate. the longer the barrel the longer the duration of acceleration and the faster the muzzle velocity, and hence the range is increased (all else being equal).
