Turn 1;
Scotland Scotland united under the banner of King Malcolm. Their first target, Inverness. If it could be captured, the whole of Scotland would be a united force, which could seriously challenge the mighty English. __________________________________________________________________ Russia Novgorod; year of the lord 1080 (that's the start date, right?) The construction of a port is started. The prince is sent with a small force to secure the loyalty of Riga. Another force, lead by the grand duke himself, leaves for Smolensk. __________________________________________________________________ The year 472 (or 1080 according to the Christian calender): the Turks
The Turks' rightful ruler is the noble Sultan Jalal, who holds court in Ikonium, the Seljuk capital. His heir is Crown Prince Mustafa, governor of Caesarea. After the defeat of the Byzantines at Manzikert nine years ago, the Turks have gradually consolidated their grasp on Anatolia and Armenia. They are now planning further conquests. A spy is sent into the lands near the Black Sea. He discovers the poorly guarded castle of Trapezunt.
__________________________________________________________________ Hungary money: 11000. I own the regions Budapest (city) and Bran (fortress). characters: King László the Righteous (Budapest), Keresztes (Budapest), General István (Budapest) Prince Kálmán (Bran). Building: Market in Budapest. Roads in Br. 3 units of cav in Br. Actions: General István has been sent with 1030 soldiers to the borders of the region Bran. The village of Bukarest is now one day ride away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I know of the outside world: Not much. Europe is a large, scary and unknown place.

Turn 2;
Scotland The garrison at Inverness was much stronger than first thought. Once Edmund Canmore reached the castle, he knew he would have to wait months, years to quell this Scottish insurgency. Patience was the key. Whilst Inverness was under siege, King Malcolm and Prince Edward plotted an even bigger task, the invasion of mainland England. York was their next target. Soon the Highland Warriors would decend on this weakly defended town, which had no direct allegiance to the throne in London. A prime target. The year 474 (or 1082 according to the Christian calender): the Turks Sultan Jalal decides to adopt 28-year-old Qutuz of Taskent, one of his most promising generals. Qutuz is an able commander, a fair administrator, and a devout Muslim. His loyalty is beyond doubt and the Sultan feels that he has sufficiently proven his value. Also this year, watch towers are built along the main roads of the Turkish territories.
______________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary Building: Barracks in Bran, city militia and diplomat in Budapest. Actions: Pioska sent to border with HRE. Spy Baltasar Jacob sent into polish region Krakow. Cardinal Ulászló sent south into rebel region Sofia. General István gains a clear victory against the rebels in Bucarest. Of his 1030 men he just lost 170, but killed 304 rebels while 321 surrendered. Still, none of his troops gained experience. However, István gains +1 command, he is a promising commander. Bucarest was plundered, and taxes set to very high. Fields are being planted. We received 4 cav units in the capital as a reward. These were sent south to join with commander Keresztes army. New commander is György. The army has been sent to the southwest border of Budapest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I know of the outside world: Poland and the HRE exist.

Turn 3;
Scotland Prince Edward led the Highlanders to a victory at York, and in doing so sent a clear message to the English Throne. The Scots had struck quickly and decisively, snatching York from the English rebels. The Liberation of Britain had begun! This was a sign of times to come. The face of the British Isles was changing..... Meanwhile, in Inverness Edmund Canmore continued to lay siege. But as learnt before, he knew he would be in for the long haul. The Scots had to be patient, and not let the garrison at Inverness take a victory. Waiting for reinforcements would not be easy however, as the Scots were seriously attacking England now. The priorities had shifted in the space of a couple of years. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it meant the Unification of Scotland would have to be put on hold. The year 476 (or 1084 according to the Christian calender): the Turks Several infrastructural projects are started, mainly the construction of roads and ports. Qutuz of Tashkent is appointed as supreme commander of the Seljuk army. He levies several units of foot archers, horse archers and spearmen, and marches towards Adana.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary Building: Guarrison quarters Bran, Hungarian cav in Bran, city militia and Spearmen in Budapest. Actions: Pioska is now in HRE territory, will contact Vienna next turn. Spy Baltasar Jacob passed Krakow, moves north towards some rebel territory. Diplomat András of Verad sent from Budapest northwards to Poland, contacts Polish Princess. Establishes trade relations, exchanges map info, and signs an alliance. Trader Denés Corvinus moves northeast from Budapest to trade with amber. Cardinal Ulászló crosses into region Sofia. Prince Kálmán beats a rebel army to the south of Bran. Clear victory. Of 382 men only 28 are lost while 354 remain. The bandits lose 102 out of 241, and the gang is disbanded. Prince Kálmán gains +1 loyalty. He now moves southwards, gathering a mixed force with troops from Bran, Bucarest and mercenaries. He will be near Sofia in two turns. In the west of the kingdom, Commander György crosses the river Save and will reach the undefended rebel village of Zagreb next turn. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I know of the outside world: I have seen the northern border to the Byzantine Empire to the south of Sofia.

Turn 4:
Scotland Once again the Scottish armies pushed further down the British Isles, this time heading for the famous castle of Nottingham. Armed with a mixture of Militia, Highland troops and Cavalry, Prince Edward carried on where he left off at York. The force had purpose, the English were weak and were not expecting a serious Invasion from the North. Their priorities were firmly in Normandy. It would be very unlikely for them to send reinforcements from France, by the time they got there it would be to late, and it would also show up England as a much more fragile nation than before. They would have to face the Scots head on. This battle was far from over, and the English had significant armies in London. The next few years were crucial. As before in previous years, the superb surge into England was not matched up in the far North. Inverness was proving a tough nut to crack. Edmund Canmore had to weaken the garrison, slowly but surely. However the siege was dragging out, and costing the Scots more than time. The army held there would have been useful for the English invasion. Word also got around that the King himself, King Malcolm would come to help finish the siege off. Despite being very old, King Malcolm was keen to get involved. It was even rumoured he wanted to join his Son in Nottingham.... The year 478 (or 1086 according to the Christian calender): the Turks Qutuz of Tashkent begins the siege of Adana. The Armenians cower behind their walls. Qutuz decides to starve them into submission, as his horse archers are not the right kind of troops to storm a city. An imam begins to preach the teachings of Islam in Lower Armenia.
______________________________________________________________________________ Hungary Building: Clearing in Budapest. Actions: Princess Pioska holds talks with HRE in Vienna: trade relations and an alliance established. Spy Baltasar Jacob passed rebel village of Breslau, moves west to return south. Sees rebel fortress of Thorn in the distance. Diplomat András of Verad is in polish territory, moving further NE. Trader Denés Corvinus is in Karpathians and begins trading amber at 43 per round. Cardinal Ulászló pauses next to the rebel fortification of Sofia. Prince Kálmán crosses Danube and is now in the province Of Sofia. Commander György conquers the rebel village of Zagreb. It is a clear victory: of 841 men 136 are lost, while the enemy loses 241 out of 481 before surrendering. Zagreb is plundered, and clearings are built. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I know of the outside world: I now own four provinces: Budapest, Bran, Bucarest, and Zagreb. My kingdom stretches between two seas: the Black Sea in the east and the Adriatic in the west. Here, however, a crucial coastline still has to be reached.

Turn 5;
The year 480 (or 1088 according to the Christian calender): the Turks A spy discovers the mountain castle of Tiflis. This might be a target for future conquest. Diplomatic contacts are established with the Byzantines and a trade agreement is reached. With the conclusion of this deal, a mission from the Council of Nobles is completed and 500 florins are added to the Seljuk treasury. 30-year-old Qutuz of Tashkent and his army continue the siege of Adana.
________________________________________________________________________________________________ Novgorod Riga is taken, as is Smolensk. The port of Novgorod has been completed, the first two ships constructed. They are sailing across the sea with a contigent of soldiers, led by the prince. Another army heads eastwards, towards Moscow. What I know of the outside world: Nothing _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary Building: No building. Actions: Princess Pioska is moving NNW, now in the Province of Prague. Spy Baltasar Jacob is also near the rebel village of Prague, moving south towards alpine passes. Diplomat András of Verad is near the polish fortification of Halych, and moving NE in polish territory. Cardinal Ulászló moves south into the Byzantine province of Thessaloniki. Prince Kálmán is now one day away from besieging the rebel fort of Sofia. The economy has taken a serious downturn. Reasons or this will have to be explored. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A population count gave the following numbers: Budapest 4382, Bran 3570, Bukarest 659, Zagreb 637.

The year 482 (or 1090 according to the Christian calender): the Turks Qutuz of Tashkent continues the siege of Adana. The city is about to surrender. The Council of Nobles decrees that the city of Tiflis has to be taken for the glory of our empire. The imam Baraka starts spreading Islam in the territories surrounding Edessa.
______________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary money: 150 Building: Still, no building. Trade relationship has been established through diplomats from Venice and the Byzantine Empire, with these states. An exchange of map info was turned down by both states. The impression is that of a rather cold reception. Actions: Princess Pioska has found a suitable husband in Azzony Hideg, an exceptionally loyal young commander of 16 years of age. Spy Baltasar Jacob is now near to Nürnberg, an HRE city. Diplomat András of Verad is near the polish fortification of Halych, still moving NE in polish territory. Cardinal Ulászló is now next to the Byzantine province capital of Thessaloniki, a rather weakly defended city. Prince Kálmán has begun the siege of Sofia. The newly promoted General Hideg is moving southwards from Budapest, waiting for orders. He has a strong army with him consisting of 4 units of hungarian noble cav and 3 units spear militia. The economy shows slight signs with recovery, probably due to an increasing population. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are several possible targets for a future aquisiton of lands. Notably: Prague, rebel city; The region to the south of Ragusa; or rebel provinces to the east of Bran. Alternatively a direct pre-emptive attack on the Byzantines or Venice might be a possibility. Yet, I do not feel strong enough for this yet.

The year 484 (or 1092 according to the Christian calender): the Turks A year of great festivities, as crown prince Mustafa weds the beautiful Dur-cihan. May their marriage be long and prosperous!
Adana is finally taken and converted into a small village. A masjid is built in Iconium for the greater glory of Allah.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary money: -55 Prince Kálmán has conquered Sofia. Clear victory, lost 313 out of 1237 men, while the enemy suffered 355 losses before the remaining 378 surrendered. No troops have won any distinction. Money gained from plunder: 1412 (now at 1357). Building: Roads in Sofia. Two units of slavic bondsmen in Bran. Disbanded: Two units of slavic mercenaries in Sofia (to save money). Hired men can never be trusted. Actions: Spy Baltasar Jacob is now in the SW corner of Nürnberg province, on the alpine rim. He sees a rebel province to the west (Bern?), and another HRE province, Staufen. Diplomat András of Verad moves past a stretch of land that belongs to the rebel province of Kiew, and has now moved into the rebel territory of Vilnius. Cardinal Ulászló moves westward towards the Dalmatian coast to explore the lay of the land there. General Hideg receives a change of orders: He turns east, to move towards Iasi. He will only be there in 5 turns or so. To prevent another nation laying siege to this vital fortification, General Istvan moves out of Bukarest (only in company of his bodyguard) to reach Iasi next turn. He will be joined there by one unit of hungarian cav. This leaves Bran dangerously exposed, now only defended by one unit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All lands south seem occupied by the Byzantine Empire, while the impression is that Venice and the HRE dominate the East.

The year 486 (or 1094 according to the Christian calender): the Turks An eventful year on the diplomatic front. Our faithful servant, the diplomat Kasim of Ganja holds talks with Fahim, special envoy of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Egypt. A trade agreement is made and an alliance announced. Our Muslim brothers will make sure that our southern borders are safe.
____________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary money: 1027 Building: Clearing in Sofia. Recruiting Diplomat in Budapest. Actions: Diplomat András of Verad moves further into Vilnius. Cardinal Ulászló moves further towards the Dalmatian coast and discovers that territories there still are rebel land. General Hideg splits his army: he continues south into Sofia with his hungarian noblemen, to move towards the Dalmatian coast. Commander Hümér is now in charge of 3 infantry units to move towards Bran and Iasi, to be there in 3 turns. He confronts a rebel army and achieves a clear victory: of his 457 men, only 102 are lost, while the enemy loses 119 of 271 men. He is promoted General, as man of the hour. General Istvan lays siege on Iasi, and is joined by one unit of hungarian cav from Bran. Iasi will surrender in 3 turns, which will not leave enough time for Hümér infantry to reach the siege. We hope that the besieged forces in Iasi will be weakened enough to be beaten into submission. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A venetian army has been spotted to the west of Zagreb, on the Dalmatian coast.

The year 488 (or 1096 according to the Christian calender): the Turks The diplomat Kilij Murat is sent into the lands of the Hungarians to establish relations with our brothers of the steppes of Central Asia. A small force under Captain Haluk is sent north into the Caucasus to capture the fortress of Tiflis.
Novgorod After another serie of victories, the puny principality of Moskau has been added to the grand duke's realm. The pioneers setting across the sea has also been successful, securing a foothold in the Catholic *cough*heretic*cough* world by assaulting and taking Stockholm. Though small and at first glance insignificant, the grand duke has equally grand plans for this barren land (Sweden) and immediatly orders extensive improvements to the agriculture in the region. Roads are also constructed to make it easier to cover the vast distances the Novgorodians hold as their own. Some evil rebel has also appeared near Riga, threatening to close the new road unless he receives forty bottles of vodka. The grand duke has choosen to ignore him for now though (there are conflicting reports for reasoning... some say he doesn't have enough troops to deal with the rebel, others - definitely more correctly so - claim he doesn't waste time on such insignificant details). Further, the grand duke has, after a serie of newborn grandchildren, adoptions and marriages, officially lost track of his family. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary money: 789 Building: Leather tannery in Bran. Two units of balkan archers upgraded at Sofia. Actions: Diplomat András of Verad now somewhere in the wilderness of Vilnius. Cardinal Ulászló near Durazzo. The little fortification is in fact Sicilian now, and all actions to take it will for now be aborted. The newly recruited diplomat Elek of Nyitra is sent west from Budapest, to the Po plains and beyond. Spy Balthasar Jakob is in the Alps. He spots the town of Milan, as well as the HRE fortress of Staufen. General Hideg moves next to Sofia with his hungarian noblemen. Commander Hümér is with his 3 infantry units next to Bran. General Istvan continues his siege of Iasi. Iasi will surrender in 2 turns. Prince Kálmán moves sharp eastward from Sofia to meet a turkish diplomat. One additional unit of Spear militia is sent under the command of Commander Georgius from Bran towards Sofia. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A diplomat has arrived from Turkey. He brings the following news: "Greetings, esteemed one! My name is Kilij Murat, servant to Sultan Jalal, rightful ruler of the Seljuk Sultanate. The Sultan has ordered me to explore the realms beyond our borders and establish friendly relations with other peoples. Especially with the enemies of our eternal enemies: the perfidious Roman Empire! I have made the decision to visit the noble Hungarians first, because, as you well know, there are strong ties between our nations. Centuries back, we lived as brothers in Central Asia, or so our great sage and historian Muhammad Sipahi of the Porte claims. When your people moved west and our people moved south, we parted ways and the bonds of brotherhood were broken. But not forever! It is true that our people worship Allah, and your people the Christian God, but Christians are able to practice their religion freely in our realm. They are protected the Sultan himself and those who do them harm are severely punished. All in all, we feel an alliance between our two peoples is in order. We both face a dangerous enemy: the Byzantines. The Seljuks are not currently at war with these cowards, but a day may come that the Byzantines will want to avenge their terrible defeat at Manzikert, now 25 years ago, where we routed their forces and captured their emperor. Should there ever be war with the Byzantines, we will agree to divide the Byzantine territories between us: the Seljuks hold claim to everything east of the Aegean Sea (including Rhodes), while the Hungarians can claim Greece and Constantinople. We will also establish trade relations. In sum, our proposal is: - alliance - trade rights May Allah protect you. Your humble servant, Kilij Murat" Our answer is: "Greetings! I am Prince Kálmán. Welcome to our lands. Gladly I will accept your offers, as we are so close in kin and only separated by the Black Sea. Although we have nothing against our neighbours the Byzantines, we have spotted several of their armies across the border. They dream futile dreams of past greatness, which we do not share. We agree that an end has to be put to their corrupt empire as soon as possible. Thus, although the prospect of yet more bloodshed saddens us, we agree to split their empire in the proposed way, with us taking the lands to the west and you the ones to the east of the Bosporus, including the island of Rhodes. I agree that an alliance encompassing trade rights would be of advantage to both of our people, and also feel that a trading of map information would be a good thing to consider. May our friendship be long and fruitful." Reply: "Esteemed one! Thank your for your hospitality. We are glad that you accept our offers and we are glad to accept your proposal to exchange geographical knowledge. Unfortunately, I am rather lost in your lands, so it may take another turn or so before I find a Hungarian city or army to formalise our alliance. I will give you an indication of my location. A few turns ago, I crossed the Bosporus and moved past Constantinople towards the north. I have crossed the Byzantine-Hungarian border near the Black Sea, but still several miles inland. Please, would you be so kind as to direct me to the nearest city or friendly army? I fear that otherwise, valuable time may be lost if I am forced to wander around aimlessly. Your most humble servant, Kilij Murat"

Turn 10;
The year 490 (or 1098 according to the Christian calender): the Turks. Our Great Sultan's second son, Tutush ad-Dawlah, comes of age in Iconium. He is brave and intelligent young man, though somewhat extravagant at times. The sixteen-year-old is an excellent rider and marksman, and yearns to lead Seljuk armies to victories when he's little bit older. His chance will certainly come.
Right now, however, it is not Tutush' time yet. Our local commander Haluk has started the siege of the castle of Tiflis. It is going to be a long siege, but Haluk had established an excellent supply line and he intends to starve the city into submission.
Our spy, whose name will not be disclosed, reports that the Egyptians are investing the holy city of Jerusalem. We feel that this is most unwise, and might lead to a crusade by a horde of Christian fanatics from the West. A horde which will want to travel through our lands.... Kilij Murat reaches the Hungarians and is led to a certain Prince Kalman. Our skilled diplomat puts the following proposal on the table: "Greetings, esteemed one! Actions: General Istvan hires two units of slavic mercenaries for the siege of Iasi, as he believes that the inhabitants will make a last ditch attempt to lift the siege. Whatever happens, Commander Hümér will be able to either occupy the conquered fortress next turn, or re-initiate the siege. Diplomat András of Verad will reach the russian province of Smolensk next turn. Cardinal Ulászló moves south along the dalmatian coast. Elek of Nyitra is near Zagreb, where a Papal and a Milanese envoy can be found. Spy Balthasar Jakob reaches Milan. He also spots Genova (Milan) and Bologna (HRE). General Hideg takes three units of spearmen from Bran and moves west, to reach byzantine territory clandestinely via the balkan mountains. Prince Kálmán moves back to Sofia after finishin successful talks with the turkish envoy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Of interest is that the powerful city of Florence is still a rebel territory. A byzantine army lingers at the southern borders west of Sofia. The alliance with Turkey has been forged. Trade rights have been exchanged, as well as map information.

_________________________________________________________________________________________ Hungary money: 807 Building: Bran is clearing forests for fields. Actions: Elek of Nyitra holds talks with the milanese envoy. Talks are cancelled due to the arrogance of the envoy, who demanded money in exchange for trade rights. Elek now moves towards sicilian territory of Durrazzo. Diplomat András of Verad makes offer regarding trade rights, map info at russian city Smolensk. Cardinal Ulászló moves next to the city of Thessaloniki. He reports that the city is not defended too strongly, but that there are some troops bivouacing next to it. The relations to the Byzantine Empire are now considered to be weak. Prince Kálmán moves his forces southward towards Thessaloniki, provoking a war. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message from the Sicilian Kingdom: "To the ruler of the Hungarian kingdom, I would like to marry my princess to the heir of your side in order to establish an alliance. Some have whispered that Tutush is merely in it for the money, and that the woman is exceptionally ugly. Their is some concern at the Sultan's court that the marriage may not be fruitful. Kilij Murat enters the Durazzo Region, owned by Sicily. The region is uncannily quiet. Cardinal Ulászló moves to eastern Thessalonia. Troops at Thessaloniki have been reinforced. Spy Balthasar Jakob is near the french fortress of Toulouse. Bordeaux is a rebel province, and the city south of the Pyrenees is Portuguese. General Istvan departs from Iasi in direction of Sofia. He reaches the province of Bukarest. Prince Kálmán moves his forces into the western Thessaloniki mountains. Hümér Balacs marries Erzsébet of Kolozsvar. ---------------------------- A few letters of importance: From the Sicilian kingdom: 1)"Dear King of Hungary, An attack on the Byzantines is not an easy prospect, as I have just managed to get a trade agreement out of them. But if you don't expect me to help you (my army is on Sardegna at the moment) you are welcome to attack Thessaloniki. The question is whether I then automatically declare war because of the alliance - I don't think I get a choice, do I? If you could wait with an attack, I would have nothing against that and I could send my army over there (in 5-10 rounds). If you would instead attack Venice, I could lend you a hand more directly (blockades of harbours)." 2)"Unfortunately our princess is no longer available. All other offers stand as proposed." Answer to Sicily: "We agree to an alliance, even without princess. I do not think you are in danger if I attack the Byzantines. You will not automatically have to declare war to them. I will only be able to attack in 3-5 rounds anyway. I don't expect you to help me." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From Russia: "Dear King of Hungary, The way I see it, we can profit greatly from forming a military alliance. First of, the prospect of the two of us becoming enemies is less than appealing to me. I have rather large concentrations of troops close to Kiev and outclass you when it comes to production and economy... but all of these are better spent elsewhere and I respect the fact that your standing army is larger than mine (in total). Indeed do I fear all-out war could spell an early demise for both of us. I'm sure you're vary of the Venetians to your east and Byzantines to the south? Add our common rivals, the Poles, to the equation and the idea of us clashing becomes a terrible idea. Therefore, I propose that we both declare our intentions towards each other as only honest, true, noble and above all peaceful. --- paragraph edited out by the royal censors ---- Finally... now that you first have a diplomat in my lands, it's rather convenient to just get it done with ;)" Answer to Russia: "Dear Tzar, It is agreed, we propose an alliance."
