Posts: 2 09/08/08 15:46:22	Tags : grrrr I bought Medieval Total War Gold Edition from a store whilst on holiday in Wales recently. There was a big sticker on the wrapper marked "Windows Vista Compatible". /rant on Why then after patching to the latest version and trying allsorts of compatibility and permissions combinations did I have to search for ages to download a patch to fix 2 buttons files in order to stop it crashing as soon as I launched the campaign tutorial on my new Dell laptop? /rant off Last Edited By: LatooLovebringer 09/08/08 16:04:43. There are posts about the problem in the support forum; but there is no resolution. Downloading the fix might be worthwhile for folks with a 9 series card, but isn't it just a waste of time for me? Or do you know something I don't: like how to get battles to work right on an 8 series?

Posts: 19 09/10/08 03:07:01	No, if you replace the two bif files which are located in the "Buttons" folder MTW works just great with either 8800 series cards (Assuming that Martok was telling the truth) or with the 96/9800 variety like I have. I'd post some pictures proving it but I don't know how to do that. Martok figured this out because he had a more or less vanilla version of the game that wouldn't play and a heavily modded one that would with an 8800 series card. He started swapping files that were different and these were the only two that caused a problem. A modder had changed the buttons to fit the decor of a different map. The only problem is two stupid buttons! I promise. It works, better than ever, you'll be amazed

Posts: 750 09/16/08 12:40:00	Glad you got it working, LatooLovebringer! Just a clarification, by the way: Credit actually goes to peter_de123 for the solution that's helped quite a few players to get MTW working again. My only role was to sticky his original post at the Org so people would see it.

Posts: 138 09/18/08 23:17:53	Not as many as is claimed. It made no difference whatsoever for me. I have the exact same problem with my Geforce 8800 that I have always had. The sprites don't display properly, and the game is unable to translate mouse clicks on the battle map properly. I can only conclude that this fix is for some other problem than the well known fact that MTW cannot be played on this series of Nvidia cards. Thanks for trying to help.

Yeah, the 8800 is far and away the worst offender of the lot. Fixes that work for other cards don't seem to do a d*** bit of good with yours. Sorry, man.

Posts: 2035 10/23/08 08:24:51 Administrator	Welcome Barnicals. bif files are picture files. There is a reader out there called bifreader. You can probably find it by googling. If you can't I will go look. There are tools at the www.mizus.com site. Now the patches for the game is a whole another matter. You don't need to do anything to the bif files to go get a patch and patch your game. If you have only MTW I think it is the 1.1 patch and if you have MTW-VI it is the 2.01 patch.

Thanks for that, I found it easily. I had planned on trying to use the bifreader to read the bif files, but this didn't change anything. Exanded and unblocked the bifreader and changed the default buttons to be read by the right programmes, deleted and downloaded both files anew... (edit, no cursing please), all Iwant to do is kill the everyone with english longbows. Lol.
