Medieval Total War Redux
1.0b is now available. Redux is an alternative version of Medieval - Total War and it is compatible with both v.1.1. and VI/v.2.01 (using the redux
VI-upgrade 1.0). Redux will change the original game all over, and it will replace and overwrite all the necessary files over the original ones. Redux
introduces an almost entirely new unit set, new tech-trees, titles, factions and portraits along with plenty of other stuff, including a re-calibrated AI. The
redux-AI seems to be more active and offers a more diverse and thus a harder opposition than original, even the rebels are a factor in redux (making it a more
interesting and challenging game to play). Redux changes the original game to something new yet familiar. If you like the original MTW, chances are that you
will like the redux-version too. Now, I hope all of you like redux and have as much fun with it as I have, enjoy guys!

Whew I just finished a XL+Tyb mod campaign and now I gotta try this.
Will this mod play well with the other mods or does it need to be by itself? |

I have 4 folders of MTW on my machine now. But I need you to play "help the old dude out" I can't seem to paste the folder right and I do
appreaciate the 3 methods you saw fit to put in the zip file. But would you indulge me and give a step by step for the old dude man. I can't seem to make a
go of it.
What does the first menu screen look like when the mod is loaded right? |

Have everything worked out for you? If not, follow the instructions on the site I linked for you earlier (the install emergency) and post in your case there. Someone will help you there sooner or later (I might even be me! He he!). No worries here, we will fix it if there are any problems.

I was just going to load it and start a campaign. Now it's 02:30 in the morning and I've got to get some sleep. Played the HRE to 803 without any
problems with the map or while in 3D battle.

Axalon , Yes I am having fun with a healthy dose of stress too. Not knowing the tech tree and not being sure of what is going to happen next reminds me of when
I first started playing MTW. It is the same and it is different.
The level is at expert and high taxes. I just don't like taxes , I'll lower them when I can and raise them if I have to. I started out with an alliance with Poland and to secure the borders of Franconia. Let me tell you that the Rebels were no push over. They counter- attacked in Saxony and I had to withdraw. Then my allies the French chased some Rebels out of Flanders into Freisland , creating a large rebel force there.. Freisland was a real hard battle. The Norse did attack to Saxony , but by then I had a large army in Fraconia , the Kaiser chased them back to Norway , when they counter-attacked in Sweden ; the battle was almost lost. It was a very brutal battle. After the battles of Freisland & Sweden , the HRE decided to turtle. After 803 A.D. the HRE got smart and bribed the rebels in Northumbria , Scotland and Ireland. Then the English attacked the French in Anjou . I sided with the French and had to fight the English in their last hold-out of Mercia. The battles are not as easy as in the other MTW's that I have played. I really do have to watch my king and take care of him. The English are no more , the HRE control all the British Iles and I'm waiting for the Norse king to die before the attack on Norway proceeds.The Norse heir apparent is a clown , so I'm hoping to keep the casualties down by waiting. The Polish king lost his mind and attacked the HRE in Bohemia. The HRE now controls Bohemia, Prussia and Poland. I bought a bishop to ask for a ceasefire from the Polish king. Papal warning and all that. There is not going to be any spamming of religious agents in this game ! Too Pricey. At present , the French & the Almos are going at it. I am sinking the Almo ships as token support to the French and I have a Crusade Maker on stand-by. Speaking of ships , I got a kick out of all those pirate ships that had to be delt with once the HRE went to sea. It is now 865 A.D. BTW, nice job and Thank You.
It is 914 now and I think I am geting a handle on the 3D battles. They are getting to be quite fun. The choices of types of units to build is awesome. The bridge battle from Flanders to Normandy was a close call with 1900 versus 1900 but but finished with a victory. The Battle of Croatia was a almost a complete rout of the enemy even though they had a much higher command rating. The French disappeared on there own and the Lombards attacked the HRE so now they are minus Austria , Venice and Tyrol. They have a huge army bottled up in Switzerland. The Poles are stuck in Wallicia but still won't accept a ceasefire. I am able to play with Normal taxes now. The HRE is starting to look like an empire .

Hello again Halfen, I'm sorry for my delayed response here but I have been swamped with other things so I have been unable to post here during that time. At any rate, it seems that you are having lots of fun and seems to do fairly well at that! What do you need my pointers for!?! He he! You seem to manage the HRE quite well on your own! One thing thou, how does things look like on the "eastern borders/front" have the Russians become a mighty power yet? If they have there is a distinct possibility that they will create problems for you further down the road. Ok a few other things as well... How does the Byzantines fare? Have the Saracens overrun them yet? Or is it the other way around? Does Byzantium hold their ground against the hordes of Camel cavalry and Saracen infantry? My gues is that France will return later (that is if they disappeared by civil war). I take it that Moors have crushed all Iberian kingdoms at this point? So, the British Isles have become a part of the HRE, I must say that this is fairly rare at least when things are under AI management. And another completely different thing; what kind of troops do you prefer in your armies? How does a typical Halfen army look like?
That hardly comes as a surprise to me, redux is probably a lot harder than other versions in battle. It's far more lethal, diverse and unforgiving. Redux demands your attention to details in battle in a whole other way than the original (and probably most other versions as well). The reasons for all this are the reduxed battle-system, which is far more diverse and lethal. But it's more fun that way I think! There really is a big difference in battle if you compare redux and with other versions of MTW. It's the battle-systems that are differently designed and it is that fact that creates the blatant discrepancy here. There is the CA-system (used by most versions) and then there is the redux-system and differences are quite noticeable for you as a field commander. Anyway, do continue to keep me and others posted on how things are going for you! And don't forget to download then new SPANISH FIX I just released
(thus the Spanish problems are no more). It will have limited effects on your current HRE-campaign and will only have a 100% effect on your game once you start
a new scenario/campaign. Oh and thanks for the praise.

Hi Axalon ; Kaiser Lothar IV and his medium size troops sends their greetings.
I have been meaning to get back sooner than this too , so I know what you mean by being a little busy sometimes. Anyway the Spanish fix for 2.01 has been installed with no noticeable effect so far. Though the Spanish might say different. They appeared after the French disappeared and are now an ally. The Portugese were wiped out in the first act and have yet to to do a Brittany Spears. The Spanish seem to be getting there act together for they now control Leon all the way to Aquitaine. The Moors still control the south.The Spanish lost Aragon to the Rebels when they were attacked from Toulose. The Germans would like to take Toulose but that would mean boxing in the Burgundians. I don't see the need to put any undo pressure toward Burgundy. Now for the Russians, they have had an on again-off again war with the Byzantines but now appear to be in an entrenched war with them. The Russians got the better of the Lithuanians. They are no more. Those two, ( Russ & Byz ) are standing off with each having with giant armies, one in Lithuania and the other in Kiev. I am not sure of the situation in the mid-east but the Byzantines seem to have the upper hand. I have been kind of busy dealing with those pesky Lombardians. Manage to get the Kaiser excommunicated in the process . So it's been very low to normal taxes for some time. His soul may be in question but the HRE now controls Rome and Genoa. The last of the Lombard lineage and the last of the Lombard vestage, King Robert III , was killed when a boulder landed on him while he was hiding in Genoa castle. As to what a typical Halfen army looks like, alot of missle units , that includes mounted cross-bowman and catapults too. Recently discovered the Frankish cross-bow that can really make a difference when trying to hold the center. For infantry was useing Saxon warriors but now use the Saxon infantry. Regulars from Swabia , light halbs from Brabenburg and was getting teched-up spearman from Denmark but I can get them from other places too now. I learned from the Lombards that I will need a few more heavy infantry in the line up. Fighting against a teched-up developed army can get pretty hairy at times, especially when they decide to fight back ! I try to avoid mellee because it is so costly , but sometimes it can not be helped. Built an Order house in Milan , seemed like an idea since the Kaiser is Ex-comm'd but have yet to build or try any of those new units. The Poles are still in Wallachia, at war , but are the least of my worries. The Pope is in Naples, Greece , Sicily and Rhodes. The HRE controls Serbia. After the new Kaiser comes I will try to get an alliance with the Pope. circa 959 The HRE got the alliance with the Pope. The Burgundians attacked and they are no more . The Spanish , Italians and the Russians broke off relations with the HRE because of the Burgundians. The HRE attacked and conquered the two rebel states of Toulouse and Aragon. I guess that was too much for the Moors since they launched a Jihad for Aragon. Bad idea for the Moors. After about six years of naval battles their navy consists of a few fishing boats. About this time the reserves were in place and the attack on Valencia commenced. 70 units versus 60 units in a bridge battle with no time limit. Had to cross the river twice before the Moors finally called it quits. I 'm a little concerned about the Byzantine navy. Its' fleets are huge and powerful. Very powerful. 
The Saraceans(sp?) have disappeared from the map . They are nowhere to be found. BTW , I think now that one of the problems with earlier battles was useing the Saxon infantry in the wrong way. dooh ! I am also useing alot of light infantry and light spearman for reinforcements in battles. They are cheap and they do not tire as quickly. A real plus with long in the tooth battles. Believe it or not those Peasent Calvarier can be pretty useful too.

Well it seems that the HRE comes along fairly good here and at a steady pace. Lithuanians, England, France (they might be back), Burgundy, Lombardy, Aragon and Portugal are all gone. The same appears to be true for the Saracens, the Viking Empire and Hungary. That leaves Byzantium, Russians, Italy, The Moors and Spain (Poles and Papists also but they don't appear to be viable powers at this stage). Out of those four, my guess is that you will have most problems with the Moors in the desert. Time will tell for sure. Italy might also be dangerous for you if they are allowed to get strong (watch out for that royal and Italian infantry!). Byzantium's navy might very well break you if you don't have a strong navy of your own (just wait until your next campaign with the Spanish fix at full effect! Then there will be plenty of navy all over. But the effects are only at about 40-50% now until you start a new campaign)! At any rate I what a bit surprised at your army composition. It appears that heavy troops are not that popular here? Is there a reason for that? Anyway, it strikes me as a bit unusual considering the fact that the HRE really excel in that area; Imperial guard, Imperial cavalry and heavy infantry for instance are all top-notch and excellent troops and that will undoubtedly show in battle (a bit expensive thou, but you will probably need them to finish off Italy at least. Otherwise they are likely to have better armies than you do). As for ranged troops the HRE are probably the best faction in the game short of England. Royal Archers are excellent and versatile troops and Frankish crossbow-formations can very powerful as well - if they are used and deployed correctly. I got a question for you on that. You said you had heavy concentrations of missile-units. Is it because of reduxed battle or is something else that makes you have it that way? Missiles are really deadly in redux, in a whole other way than other versions of MTW. Regardless it seems that this campaign is slowly coming to the final chapters and a few other mammoth battles are still ahead I'd guess. I have a hard time imagining that you will be swept away from the map now. Whenever you will turn to the eastern front it is likely that there will be more big battles, if you are unlucky you will have to face both Russia and Byzantium at the same time. Which don't strike me as the best possible scenario. You are the Kaisers supreme commander so it's all up to you. The Russians are likely to have big but not that advanced armies and probably a lot of spears and cavalry. It would be interesting to see what you had in mind to counter that. As for Byzantium, they got good and disciplined core troops and usually very keen on missiles themselves (that appears to be hardcoded in VI). My guess is that they are a tougher foe than Russia. So are the Moors, especially in the desert (if they don't retreat of course, they can be pretty spineless at times. Hardcoded i'm afraid otherwise I would have changed it). Believe it or not those Peasent Calvarier can be pretty useful too." Again this is a bit unexpected, however it is true that redux-battles can be pretty long (I personally like that trait by the way. No real battle is settled in 5 minutes and certainly not by an egg-clock!) and that does make an impact on the fatigue-levels. Well if it works for you I see no reason why you cant continue with it. Russia and Byzantium however might give you problems whith that tactic. So you have found a use for the peasant cavalry! I must admit I did not see that comming! Keep me and others posted on what happens next to the HRE!

Hello Axalon,
Believe it or not it is only 1014 ! But at least it is past 60%. The Spanish have been eliminated in Navare. They put up a real mammoth fight in Leon that lasted what seemed like forever. This was done after crushing the Moors. After fighting and pushing the Moors from the Iberian lands and then taking Morocco , the Moorish Navy woke up and started doing its' job. I do wonder what it would have been like if the Spanish Fix had already been in place at the start. The Moors' Navy actually seemed to know what it was doing. The Kriegsmarine finally got the better of them which allowed the invasion of Eygpt to commence. This gave the Moors a two front war from which they could not defend . Not long after they reappeared in rebel held Corsica and Tripoli. The Italians are in Sardinia with no chance of expansion. The Byzantines are still standing off with the Russians while defending against the Moors from Tripoli. The drive to the East can now begin in earnest. The Kaisers landing in Lithuania went well but time will tell the next time I start the game. Btw, I do use the heavy troops and the use of them will increase dramaticly in the east. The reinforcements in the new battle will get the highest priority. About the missile-units , against lesser troops , they are devastating , almost unbeatable. It would be folly though to depend upon them to much. I have discovered as much more than once. |

While I'm at it, could you please provide some further comments on your experiences with redux troops (anybody else is of course free to do that as
well)? I know I would be interested in reading some further opinions about that. Just a suggestion here - that's all. So, how about the final chapter here,
with grand crowning of the Kaiser as the undisputed ruler of united Europe. Anyway, once you can get hold of MTW-redux 1.0c (3rd edition) you won't be sorry for it - i'm fairly certain of that. Maybe I'll do a final post of screens over at the MTW mod area before the release - we'll see. - Cheers |

There is not going to be any "....grand crowning of the Kaiser....". The laptop crashed* and had to be formatted ;( not bad for three years of use).
This is not the type of conclusion I fought so hard for.
*The crash had absoulutly nothing to do with the game , Redux is very stable. I highly recommend Redux to any and all . |
