Will cavalry be fixed in ETW? |

|
I've been a fan of Total War since RTW. Sadly it's been since then that I've been able to enjoy using cavalry. To me cavalry in M2TW was just plain
broken. I almost never used it, since it was so time consuming to make it work right that you had to neglect the rest of your army and often lose the entire
battle while you were trying to micro-manhandle your cavalry into position and then make them actually do what you wanted them to do. I can't count the
times I watched my cavalry fizzle and get slaughtered because they would stop charging mere meters away from the enemy and start milling around, or all the
times I watched Mailed Knights get hacked to bits by a rabble of peasants with pitchforks. Cavalry in that game was so hard to use that only the CPU seemed to
be able to manage it at the same time as the rest of it's army. Usually to great effect, which caused me no end of frustration, especially when my cavalry
response was milling around like a bunch of idiots getting slaughtered by the enemy. I understand that the way cavalry worked in RTW was unrealistic and I do
care about realism, but I also want to be able to enjoy using cavalry, rather than being forced to micro-manage it every baby-step of the way. The few times
that I used small, all-cavalry forces for scouting and ambush and fought battles where I had only one or two cavalry units in my whole army, they worked
spectacularly, winning me some really cool victories. I just hope that CA can figure out a way to incorporate realistic cavalry which can be used effectively
in pitched battle without neglecting the main fight. Let me know what you think.

if you never used cavalry than you are a noob cavalry is very important in battles i won the most difficult battles with cavalry for example when i had 300
soldiers against 900 without cavalry i had no chance i also defeated the mongol and the timurid invasion in m2tw with mounted archers without them i had no
chance

LOL cavalry in medieval 2 was perfect pardon me but your unabilty to handle the cav right is not the developers fault, cavalry has never been easier to handle
i mean you must be the first person who complains about cavalry in med2, actually cavalry in medieval2 is so strong that in multiplayer they made a mod so
cavalry wasnt so strong, your units stop charging when they are about to charge because of you making crazymouse clicks all over the place, also big amount of
cavalry units are easy to handle there is even an online strategy in which you use only cavalry respecting the max cavlary that is, once again pardon me but
you are truly wrong.

Unless he's pointing towards the flaw that sometimes units(and this includes infantry too) would not charge properly. You then get 15 men moving forwards
and 100 men sitting several yards behind them doing nothing. This is something I hope they do fix.
I do however agree that most of the time cav in M2 was devestating. I've won many battles by smashing through a line effectively using knights or rolling op flanks with my cav. Spearmen seemed to give me the most trouble(as mentioned above). |

M2TW's cavalry were very powerful. Of course, Empire's cavalry will have to be used in a different way.

lol, the calvalry were awesome! Ah, i loved the horse archers charging arround the enemy as the marched tword my men, and i'd have my melle cavalry fight
off the enemy calvalry trying to get to them :) then they'd go on and plow throught the backs of spear men, wheil i moved my ha's focus to firing at
the swordsmen... ahh that was a fun battle-it happened today!!!
me-4 units mellee 2 horse archer units 2 horse melle units (btw i forgot what exactly these men are all called, but i was playing with turks if that helps) 1 archer unit (i was in the process of making three more, but the byzantine army attacked too early.) enemy- 4 melle units 2 archers 2 melle calv 1 4 star general |

I agree with the other guys, cavalry was so easy to use. Just send some of your soldiers (without horses) in a hand-to-hand fight, and then, just send your
general unit by behind ... You have win the battle

well in this era cavalry starts to loose it`s advantage, so we can expect reduced capabilities for cavalry units

I agree with the OP to an extent. Cavalry was devastating charging any unit head on, but if the unit started to withdraw away from your charge
(ie archers on skirmish) the cavalry would just sort of give up on contact with the nearest soldier in the fleeing unit.....stupid.
As for 'the-charging-unit-having-only-a-few-soldiers-charge-while-the-rest-had-a-chat' bug, just download SS. It fixes this and MANY other issues. |

The cavalry of M2 is a bugfest.
1. If the targeted unit is not moving the charge is all good. But if the enemy takes a few steps back, the charge will halt and the cavalry go into "pursue mode". 2. Cavalry will often charge until one soldier in the unit contacts, then the charge is stopped and the unit goes into "melee mode". 3. In melee, the single soldiers can only attack an enemy at their side. This would not be a problem, was it not for their pathfinding telling them to approach the enemy with the front. That is why many cavalry actions are seemingly slow and still. |

Many of these replies were painful to read. OP is talking about the charging which were bugged in MedII. It has been stated that this will not be an issue in
ETW, I'm not sure where I read it (perhaps in one of the Q&A's) but I am positive that they've said it.

Cavalry in Medieval II is bugged, very true, but heavy cavalry was still one of the most devastating units you could recruit. If you ever needed to kill 80 men
out of 90 is two seconds, heavy cavalry was your best bet.

I love the Cavalry in MTW2 and I almost never use other then Cavalry in my army unless I have to take a city witch requires footsoldiers.
The thing about Cavalry is that they need space and free line of sight. I only playe Brittania (Irland) and Crusade (Jerusalem), so in both I have very strong Cavalry. Often I only use 4-6 Cavalry units to defeat the entire enemy army :) Only problem is Spearmen of course. |

Heavy cavalry in M2 was important, I used it for ambushes, flank attacks and fill ins at the holes in my main army.
