The real crux of the question is, from the games perspective, are colonies different than any other territory, or are they all treated the same and we (the players) are the only ones who have the colony conception?

So here is a question, what defines something as a colony (in the games point of view)? For example, if I am France, and I conquer, let us say, spain, is spain
now a colony of France? Somehow I doubt that. Are colonies any territory not in Europe? Can I grant my colonies full status within my empire, possibly to
appease them if they're going to rebel? Can I create different taxes based on colonial vs national status? I realize you can exempt regions from taxes and
tax by class, but I doubt you can tax by colony vs homeland.

Yes, from the game perspective, colonies are different.

my understanding is that colonies would likely be any place you hold on a diffrent map section from your capitol though i may be wrong.
like if you are the US and you have a provence in africa that would be a colonie, where as if you took part of the canada it would simply be a part of your country. I think i have read that you will have goveners that act similar to heads of state for your faction for your colonies. |

I'm pretty sure that colonies are just non-European (meaning American or Indian) territories. They have resources that are quite valuable, so even a small
nation in Europe can be exceedingly wealthy and powerful based on their overseas ventures.
Honestly though, there's probably a lot of information here that no one really knows, at least not for a couple of weeks (we're almost there!). |

But I would imagine colonies exist only in North America and India, just like everyone else has stated. |

Does the game allow you to choose how economically oppressive the "motherland" is to the colonies? Though you don't hear it talked about much in
the history books, mercantilism was one of the biggest reasons that the 13 Colonies were able to get monetary support for the American Revolution from its own
citizens and from France. If King George III's ass hadn't been so puckered up he might have realized that allowing free trade would be far better for
his empire in the long term. Are we allowed to take this smarter path in the game?

Yeah. Like everyone is saying; colonies are pretty much non-European territories. However, I wonder whether territory in the Middle East that is held by
European nations would be considered colonies.
And Goldeagle is right. If you're going to go after colonies, CA says a strong navy would be best in order to protect the territories and supply lines/merchant fleets. Navies are going to be costly though... |

I agree with what people said here. What I'm getting at is are colonies treated differently then other territories by the game? Do colonies get different
tax rates, or more likely to rebel, or have some sort of different mechanics working for them? Or are they just normal territories that happen to have a high
resource to population ratio, where you make a lot of monies with a relatively small population.
If they are different in some way, for example, how government interacts with them, can we adjust these via our governors/ministers, or can we move towards a different government type to reduce unhappiness in the colonies. If they're not different, then they are really just territories and we are just semantically calling them colonies. |

So if I play US and I take over Britain. Britain does not become a colony it becomes a the 51st state of America lol (I know Britain really would be more like
the 16 or 20 state, because the others have not been explored yet), because its old land that been around before the America's.
But Britain Takes over US it is a colony. |

Pfft, by the time we got around to conquering Britain we'd admitted a few more states to the union. Got a problem with that? :P

But the Ancient Greeks had colonies all over Southern Europe, even in Italy. According to my dictionary, a colony is a: Settlement in a foreign region, which
is annexed on behalf of the motherland of the colonists.

March 3rd wrote: no, if you are playing as the US or say one of the india factions and you take london, it becomes a colony. I remember talk about you assigning governors if you are the US and take a part of canada it would become a state. for examples. if you are playing the US your president is over any region you hold on the american map. (where you change taxes and such from) you would have governors over your europe or india REMEMBER not all the factions will start in europe so say any region you hold out side of europe would be a colony is ONLY true if you are playing a European faction. If you are playing as one of the india factions then any region you hold on the european map would be a colony at-least until you take enough of the map to connect it to india. |

What LtChambers said that Britain wouldn't be the exact next state
I would have taken easier territory over first before going into Britain. Especial I would take Ireland over first, and use it to make an eaiser advance. |

Frostt do you have a source for that? How does it change if you set your capital city to a different continent? that was a major factor in Civilization 3 due
to the rampant corruption with distance from palace.
