The smartest AI is....

When they strong enough, they will attack the other kingdom in their border. If they are weak they try to make peace, or if they are surrounded by enemies, they will try to reducing the conflict by making peace with one of their enemy, or find a new ally. They will wait and attack you if you are weak, or you too much making enemies and they see advantage on it. Including you ally too.

For me, the AI is not smart enough. It just based on the script. If you play long enough, you will know everything about the AI. And there will be some thirst that cannot be fulfill even in Empire TW. You just can hope the next total war game will be better even a revolution.

If you already play game like civilization 4, Europe/Rome Universalist, etc. There something good in there, that Total War game must adapt.

Like diplomacy in civilization 4. The information is clear, you know your relationship history with them, why they love you and not. When you do some diplomacy trading, you can ask him what he need to make this trading success. Like you want to ally with them, but they reject you. You thinking may be they need to be bribed for gold, but how much....you do not know. In Civ4 you can ask him. And he said 4000 florin and I will ally with you.

Europe/Rome Universalist have better AI and better alliances. Your ally can help you in war by sending his army, your ally can ask you to send troops and give military access so your army can march across his land to attack the enemy.

Total War is a war game. There's no other than war. There're some empire builder game mechanic, but it all for war purpose. How the AI works, it all based on war. They will declaring war and war, nothing else. Sometimes I just want a economy purpose, knowladge purpose rather than just war.

The AI is based on script. In certain condition they are stupid and do not know how to handle the situation and do miracle things, because there's no script available for certain condition, they just using traditional script. I just hope the developer increase the script database and do some miracle things even in near dead situation. Or make the AI script is mod-able, so we can make our own AI and experience with it.
