Frederick I Barbarossa, Holy Roman Emperor! He attacked Jerusalem, but he sank in river.
Is this right? |

Federick Barbarossa never had renown in the Americas, nor did he die at sea...

Judging by your answers, I assume you ignored my hint? I'll reiterate; the person in question never sat a foot in either Germany nor Italy. Also, when I
say 'suggested' Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope, am I not also suggesting he wasn't actually elected? He wasn't see.
Alexius is quite right in his assertion regarding Frederick Barbarossa, though why he has to travel as far as the Americas to be across a sea is beyond me. |

Ah! I was puzzled a bit by the Charles V suggestion, since I had understood the hint as saying that he never actually became holy roman emperor. I'll keep
thinking.

Yup. And in North Africa, I've no idea where the ones in the Americas are. Unoriginal bloody americans never did come up with a unique idea :P

Alexius Commenus wrote:Urr... I know not of these American pillars. North Africa was indeed in my thoughts when writing that line though. To help you along the way; he was proposed Holy Roman Empire at the start of the Great Interregnum. Further, there was a gap of 30 years from the date he was elected and instated as king to being crowned and recognised as such by the Catholic church. |

The pillars of hercules divide the med. from the atlantic. Beyond them generally means the Americas, no?

Depends on what direction you're coming from. Say, if you're a lion, it would mean Spain or Europe, but if you're a Polar Bear, it would be Morocco
or Africa, no?

Ugh, the entire history of the HRE is just messed up beyond belief, I know I read about this in some book but can't remember whom or what or when or
anything.

Argh, of course! Though I don't think I've read about the pope suggesting him as emperor.

Quite so Sel, quite so :)
As an infant, he was carried across the mountains by the Birkebeiners, through a snowstorm. He was crowned in Bergen, the city between the seven mountains. Diplomats all the way from Morocco attended to his court. He died across the north sea, after (or during, depending on who you ask) an unsatisfying campaign against the Scots. |

Here's a new one:
He'd be known as a tyrant-slayer in success, or else a brother-slayer in failure. He restored an island to democracy And then retired to humble blindness. |
